The mangosteen is a tropical fruit about the size of a tangerine but with a thick, smooth and leathery burgundy skin with four to eight pillowy soft circles of juicy white flesh. Inside the thick skin are five or six triangular, floral-scented segments of white, delicious, soft flesh containing no or few flat seeds. The number of lobes on the outer tip of the fruit corresponds to the number of segments inside. Mangosteen fruits have a sweet and tart tropical flavour with undertones of lychee, peach, strawberry, pineapple and caramel.
Fresh mangosteen fruit should be eaten within a few days of being stored at room temperature. However, at a storage temperature of 10 °C (this is much warmer than the normal refrigerator temperature of 4 °C), the fruits can keep for a few weeks.
The purple mangosteen fruit, which is very popular in Thailand, used to be banned in the United States because authorities feared that importing the fruit would introduce the Asian fruit fly. The restriction was lifted in 2007, but imported mangosteen fruit must be treated beforehand to rid it of fruit flies. They are also strictly forbidden in Malaysian hotels because the purple liquid of the mangosteen fruit leaves permanent stains on bed sheets and towels. The fruit is rich in antioxidants and the pulp has been dried and processed into capsules.
