Japanese White Onions (白洋葱)

This sweet onion is an all-purpose onion, as it has a deep but not too strong flavour that makes it endlessly versatile in the kitchen. The flavour of yellow onions is a pleasant combination of tartness and sweetness that becomes even sweeter when cooked. They are typically the size of a fist, with a firm papery outer skin and fleshy layers.

STORAGE

Keep your onions in a cooler area of the kitchen, preferably in a ventilated basket, if you plan to use them within a few weeks. If you want to store them for longer, wrap them separately in paper towels or a vegetable bag and place them in the refrigerator. Chopped or peeled onions can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days before they become mushy if they are wrapped in plastic.

FUN FACTS & TIPS

When we cut onions, the sulphurous chemicals in them make us cry. To reduce the number of tears, dampen a paper towel and place it on the cutting board before cutting the onion on the damp paper.
