What is a Hami melon? This sweet melon is a special variety of cantaloupe melon whose seeds originate from the Xinjiang region of China. Hami gua melon has an elongated shape with yellow skin and green stripes. China Hami melon is known for its firm, crunchy and juicy texture, floral fragrance and tropical honey notes that develop when fully ripe. Its flavour profile is similar to that of an extremely sweet cantaloupe, with more flavour and a firmer, crunchier texture. If you are a lover of cantaloupes, you should try one of these fruits when you find them.
To check if the Hami melon is ripe, gently press the sides and stem ends. If it feels a bit soft and smells fruity at the stem ends, it's ready to eat. Also be attentive to any dark, black, or brown spots, as they may signal overripeness.
Once aromatic and ripe, the melons may be cut and preserved in a covered container for 2 to 4 days in the refrigerator. Hami melon halves may also be wrapped in plastic and kept as is in the fridge.
