Fresh Chestnuts

When uncooked, they are somewhat crunchy and bitter, and are frequently compared to the earthy nuttiness of a hazelnut. Cooked chestnuts, on the other hand, taste far sweeter than hazelnuts, more like to a sweet potato or yam than any other kind of nut, where they become starchy, buttery and sweet.

STORAGE

Fresh chestnuts left within their protective layering of husks and shell stay well in the fridge, where they may be kept easily for up to one month, when the fridge is set at a constant temperature of 2°C - 3°C. While at room temperature which is well-ventilated and dry, they only endure up to one week.

Although roasted chestnuts are the most well-known, they are also often pureed, crushed into flour, boiled, candied, steamed, and grilled, among other preparations. However, unlike other nuts such as almonds, pine nuts, and walnuts, they are low in fats and calories.
