Fragrant Pear

Fragrant pears are small, round to oval fruits with long, straight, green-brown stems. The skin is smooth, waxy and thin, with a matte yellow-green base, a red tinge and prominent lenticels or pores. When fully ripe, the snow-white flesh has a luscious, floral aroma, crunchy, delicious, sweet and firm, cream-coloured, juicy flesh and a few black-brown seeds in the centre.

STORAGE

Unlike other fruits, pears ripen from the inside out. So if they are mushy on the outside, the inner flesh may be overripe and mealy. They will keep for 2-4 days if kept at room temperature and a couple of weeks if kept in a perforated bag in the fridge.

FUN FACTS & TIPS

Because of their small size and crunchy texture, fragrant pears are best used raw. They can be sliced and mixed into green salads, fruit salads and pasta salads, packed in children's lunchboxes as a snack, sliced and placed over desserts such as ice cream, sorbets and puddings, or used in sandwiches, paninis and grilled cheese. They can also be poached in red wine and cinnamon and are a delicious treat for tarts, cakes, pies and bread. Pears go well with leafy vegetables such as rocket, kale, chard, radicchio and spinach, but also with strawberries and grapes, with cheeses such as feta, goat's cheese, gorgonzola, blue cheese and parmesan, with meats such as chicken, pork, beef and lamb and with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. They can be kept at room temperature for a few weeks and up to a month in the refrigerator.
