Family Tree Donut Peach

The flat donut peach is a variety with typical palm-sized, light yellow fruit. They are characterised by their flattened shape and are less fuzzy than other peaches. Donut peaches are reported to have a more complex flavour and aroma, generally with a hint of almond that is easy to eat in a few drippy, delectable bits.

STORAGE

To allow your peaches to ripen properly, do not shop them in the refrigerator. You can tell if a peach is ripe by the pleasant fragrance it gives off - a sure sign that a peach is ready to be enjoyed. No fragrance often equates to no flavour, and an unripe peach has no distinct fragrance. The fragrance of peaches increases as they ripen, and a fully ripe peach has an aroma that is hard to resist. Once your peaches have reached the desired degree of ripeness, you should shop them in the refrigerator so that they will keep for a few more days.

Donut peaches are best eaten fresh, as their tender flesh and delicious qualities are at their best when eaten raw. They can be sliced and added to salads, diced and mixed into salsas, added to grilled meats or blended into smoothies. They can also be substituted for peaches in any recipe that calls for them, but they lack the sweet-tart flavour of the yellow-fleshed fruit. They also go well with apricots, cherries and almonds, as well as citrus fruits, berries, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, herbs such as basil, coriander and rocket, hazelnuts, pistachios, mature cheeses such as parmesan and mild cheeses such as ricotta and burrata.
