Beijing Round Cabbage (包菜)

This variety of cabbage takes its name from its round, hard head, which resembles a ball. It looks small and neat as the leaves are closely intertwined and compact. The dense, naturally sweet and slightly crunchy texture of the leaves becomes tender and tasty when boiled, fried, added to stews, soups and curries, coleslaws, stir-fries and even fermented dishes.

STORAGE

Before cutting, a whole head of round green cabbage can be kept unwrapped in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator for 2 weeks. Once you have cut it, wrap it tightly and store it in the vegetable compartment to use within 2 to 3 days.

Green cabbage is a green leafy vegetable that grows in dense, spherical heads, which earned it the nickname cannonball cabbage. It is a member of the cruciferous family, i.e. it belongs to the botanical family Brassicaceae, along with broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and kale.
