If you want to find a ripe pear for immediate consumption, gently press a finger into the upper part of the pear, just where the stem meets the fruit. The fruit is ripe when it barely gives way there. Soft pears should not be bought elsewhere as they are overripe and the flesh is mushy and mealy. If you want to eat the pears within a few days, the top should still be firm.
