Rock melons, also known as cantaloupes, are a type of melon with a thick brown rind that has a hazy green tinge, and is surrounded by a beige net pattern, making them visually distinct. When cut open, they reveal an orange flesh that is similar to other common melon varieties, but slightly stiffer to the touch. They are known for their tropical floral aromas and sweet taste, with an average Brix value of 11, indicating their sweetness.
For best results, it is recommended to store ripe rock melons in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature to help retain their quality for a longer period of time. Like any other fruit, using them up sooner after ripening will result in a better taste.
Rock melons can be enjoyed in various ways, similar to other melon-like fruits. In Malaysia, they are often consumed raw, either sliced with a squeeze of lime or pureed into a juice-like drink. They are also used in the preparation of a popular Malaysian delicacy called sago, which is a tapioca-like starch mixed with palm sugar and coconut cream. Rock melons, as well as other tropical fruits, are commonly used as a topping for desserts, adding a burst of flavour and freshness.
